Ring and Compact Spinning.

Ring/Compact

For 70C/30W blends, yarns can be satisfactorily spun on standard cotton ring spinning frames without minimal modifications. Ideally the draft zone is for medium staple fibre lengths. This may mean minor modifications to the ring frame by stretching out the break draft to a maximum. Replacing/resetting this part of the spinning frame to a medium staple fibre set is a secondary option dependent on regularity of production.

As the proportion of wool in a short-staple blend increases, yarn properties such as strength and evenness deteriorate against standards for 100% cotton yarn. Trials at CSIRO indicate that fine and medium count blend yarns containing more than 60% of wool are not viable for most commercial knitting and weaving end-uses, both from a strength and appearance basis.

Ideally 75 fibres are needed in cross section for a ring spun yarn. It is possible to go lower than this by 10% if the cotton in the blend is combed. See attached the yarn count range proposed.

As CtnWool™ has been made to match the cotton for fibre length, roller ratch adjustments, other than normally used for 100% cotton, are not necessary.

Generally, yarn twist levels for wool/cotton blends are similar to those used for cotton yarns.  If twist liveliness becomes a problem, it is recommended a light steaming be undertaken after spinning.
